About the artist
Kinya Arai was born in Toba City. After graduating from middle school, he studied under prominent painters such as Chu Asai and Katsutsugu Makino. While exhibiting at the Kansai Art Association exhibitions, he began his career as a Western-style painter.
He later moved to Kyoto and continued his studies under Makino and Asai.
In 1920, after receiving training in ceramic production from Manzo Nakao, he shifted his focus entirely to pottery.
His ceramics, which incorporated painterly expression into decorative techniques, received high acclaim and were exhibited at the Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce’s Craft Exhibition.
