Sake Cup by Genki Hatabe | Japanese Pottery

$40.00

Genki Hatabe (born 1948) is a Karatsu-tradition ceramic artist based in Fukuoka Prefecture. For nearly half a century, he has continued working with a traditional climbing kiln (noborigama).

In 1976, he established Tozan-gama kiln in a quiet mountainous area of Fukuoka.
Drawing on Karatsu ware techniques originally transmitted from the Korean Peninsula—such as kohiki (white slip) and hakeme (brush-mark decoration)—he produces works primarily centered on tea utensils. Committed to local materials, he pursues distinctive surface qualities, including the use of ash made from tea leaves gathered from the tea fields in front of his kiln as glaze.
