Ao-bizen is a kiln effect in Bizen ware produced through reduction firing (an oxygen-deficient atmosphere), in which the iron content in the clay reacts to create blue-gray or pale bluish tones.
Because a reduction atmosphere must be carefully established inside the kiln—and requires space—achieving this color intentionally is difficult, resulting in limited production.
No glaze is used; the color emerges solely through the interaction of clay and fire. The surface is typically matte, giving a calm and understated impression.
