White Glaze Tea Cup | Shino Ware

$23.00

Shino ware tea cup with an impressive, richly textured surface.

Shino ware is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic traditions, produced primarily in and around Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. It is especially significant in the history of Japanese ceramics as one of the earliest types of pottery to make extensive use of a white glaze, and it flourished alongside the tea culture of the Momoyama period in the late 16th century.

The greatest appeal of Shino ware lies in the beauty of its characteristic white glaze and the natural surface effects created during firing, particularly the warm reddish tones known as hi-iro (“fire color”) and the softly textured yuzu-hada (“citrus-peel skin”).
