About Kanayama Ware
Kanayama‑ware originated near Goshogawara in Aomori Prefecture and draws on the region’s Sue-pottery heritage. Revived since the 1980s, it employs yakishime (unglazed high-temperature firing) around 1,300 °C, producing dense, iron-toned stoneware with natural surface changes from pine-ash and flame interaction.
The raw, unglazed finish and kiln-induced patterns reflect both minimal aesthetic and functional durability. Kanayama‑ware pieces are valued for their robust material presence and for bringing a quietly rustic yet refined note to interiors.
