Munakata Kiln is a long-established pottery studio in Fukushima Prefecture, carrying on the tradition of Aizu Hongo ware, one of Japan’s historic pottery traditions with more than 300 years of history.
The kiln is particularly known for its namagake technique, in which glaze is applied directly to unfired clay without bisque firing, before the piece is fired in a single process.
Using locally sourced Matoba clay, natural ash, amber and white glazes, as well as original glaze formulations, the kiln produces ceramics with remarkable depth, subtle color variations, and an organic beauty unique to each piece.
