About the Artist
Shunsui Mukunoki (born 1942) is a Japanese potter and the last direct disciple of the legendary Kanjiro Kawai, one of the founding figures of the mingei (folk craft) movement.
Born in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, Mukunoki studied under Kawai for ten years at Gojozaka in Kyoto. After Kawai’s death in 1966, he paused his work for a year in mourning before resuming production. In 1974, he built a kiln in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. He adopted the artist name Shunsui in 1996 and renamed his studio Benitate Kiln in 2001.
Deeply rooted in the mingei philosophy, Mukunoki’s works emphasize natural materials, spiritual depth, and functional beauty—a legacy that lives on through his hands.
* This vase is made after 1996, so the signature is Shunsui (春水).
