Antique small Owan bowl with gold maki-e decoration.
This compact bowl is decorated with traditional maki-e, a refined lacquer technique in which gold powder is applied to create delicate motifs.
Urushi (Japanese lacquer) has natural antibacterial properties and strengthens the wood. It can be repeatedly harvested from the same tree, making it an environmentally sustainable natural finish.
Although old, it has been preserved in remarkably good condition.

All OWAN BOWLS WE OFFER are genuine, heirloom-grade Japanese lacquerware.
They are made from natural wood, finished with 100% natural Urushi lacquer, and crafted entirely by hand in Japan, following traditional methods. (Plastic sinks in water — real wood floats)
Especially with antique lacquerware, the refinement of craftsmanship and the timeless beauty of form are truly exceptional — qualities that cannot be replicated by modern industrial substitutes.
