◾️About Echizen Ware◾️
Echizen ware is a traditional style of Japanese pottery that originates from Echizen, in present-day Fukui Prefecture. It is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan (Nihon Rokkoyō), a group of historic pottery centers with centuries-old traditions.

Dating back to the Heian period (8th–12th century), Echizen ware is known for its rustic, unglazed stoneware and natural ash glazing that occurs during wood-fired kiln processes. The pottery often exhibits earthy tones—reddish-brown, gray, or dark iron—resulting from the interaction between the clay and ash during high-temperature firings.

Echizen ware was historically used for practical items such as storage jars, water pots, and mortars, prized for their strength and durability. Today, Echizen potters continue to produce both traditional and modern works, maintaining the region’s reputation for refined simplicity, natural aesthetics, and functional beauty.
