15.2cm / Goto-nuri Red Lacquer Plate | Japanese Wooden Craft

$22.00

Goto-nuri is a distinctive style of red lacquerware from Kagawa Prefecture, devised by Taihei Goto in the late Edo period.
It was initially applied to tea utensils, but from around the early Taisho period it became more widely used and was also applied to everyday items such as trays and plates.
The production process consists of as many as 24 steps.
A transparent, subdued lacquer is layered over a base of red lacquer. After the lacquer is applied with a brush, the surface is gently stroked with the fingers, creating extremely fine irregular textures that form its characteristic pattern. It is regarded as one of Japan’s representative lacquerware traditions.
Beautiful piece.
