About the Glaze:
Shinsha (or cinnabar) glaze is known for its vivid red to reddish-purple tones achieved through reduction firing. By adding a small amount (1–2%) of copper to a transparent base glaze and firing in a reducing atmosphere, potters create a distinctive red hue caused by cuprous oxide. When fired in oxidation, the same glaze may turn green or light blue. This delicate process reflects a high level of craftsmanship and chemical precision.
