The foot (kōdai) is partially cut, a feature known as kiri-kōdai or wari-kōdai (split foot). While often regarded as a characteristic detail of Hagi ware, this feature is not exclusive to Hagi ware, nor is it always present.
Hagi ware originally functioned as high-quality pottery produced at an official domain kiln and was not intended for use by the general public.
One theory suggests that cutting the foot intentionally reduced its formal status, making it possible for wider circulation outside official use.
Another interpretation is that the cut made it easier to secure vessels with rope when stacking them during handling or transport.
