Yusamashi by Toshiro Ono

$45.00

Beautifully iron glazed Yusamashi by a noted potter Toshiro Ono (1903〜1995).
A good piece by the artist, different from mass-produced products.
Yuzamashi is a hot water pitcher used to lower the temperature of the water before brewing green tea.
Since Japanese tea is best brewed with the water cooled to about 70-80°C, it is often used before filling the Kyusu (tea pot).

W 9.7 cm x H 5.3 cm /  163g
Holds 130ml.
Very good condition ★★★★☆

Toshiro Ono was greatly influenced by the “folk art movement” of Muneyoshi Yanagi, who toured Shimane in 1931, and was mentored by Kanjiro Kawai, who was also from his hometown, Shoji Hamada from Mashiko, and Bernard Leach from England.

There is no signature on the item.
The reason why Mingei works are not signed comes from the philosophy of the Mingei movement. Mingei is not about asserting individual authorship, but rather pursuing “beauty” based on the premise of being used in daily life. Therefore, signs that emphasized the name of the creator were considered contrary to the spirit of mingei.
