A sculptural ceramic vase by Satoshi Sato, a leading figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics and a former member of the avant-garde Sodeisha group (1966–1980).
His work embodies the radical spirit that, in postwar Japanese ceramics, moved beyond the boundaries of functional vessels toward expressive three-dimensional form; however, this vase uniquely combines sculptural form with practical utility.

In 1966, he became a member of Sodeisha and continued to exhibit numerous works with the group until his departure in 1980.
Sodeisha, founded in Kyoto in 1948 by Kazuo Yagi, Osamu Suzuki, and Hikaru Yamada, was an avant-garde ceramic artists’ collective.
Moving away from functional vessels, the group established a new genre of three-dimensional clay sculpture known as “ceramic objets,” bringing a revolutionary shift to contemporary Japanese ceramics.
Until its dissolution in 1998, Sodeisha played a leading role in shaping Japan’s ceramic art scene for fifty years.
