About Takatori Ware

Takatori ware (高取焼) originated in Fukuoka Prefecture during the early 17th century under the patronage of the Kuroda domain. Influenced by Korean techniques and aesthetics, it was initially produced by Korean potters brought to Japan in the aftermath of the Imjin War.

Takatori ceramics are known for their thinly thrown bodies, fine-grained clay, and refined glazes—often feldspathic, iron-rich, or ash-based. Many pieces were fired in climbing kilns (noborigama), resulting in natural kiln effects such as glaze pooling, soft color transitions, and subtle drips.

Recognized as one of the "Enshū Seven Kilns" favored by tea master Kobori Enshū, Takatori ware emphasizes harmony between function and form. While originally developed for tea utensils, its expressive glazes and elegant silhouettes also made it well suited for sake vessels such as Tokkuri.
