“Negoro-nuri” is a traditional style of Japanese lacquerware associated with Wakayama Prefecture.
The piece is first coated entirely with black lacquer, followed by layers of vermilion lacquer. The surface is then polished to reveal areas of the black undercoat as subtle accents.
Originally developed for practical everyday objects used by Buddhist monks, such as trays and serving stands, Negoro lacquerware is characterized by its durable foundation and substantial layers of lacquer. Beautiful piece.
This beautifully shaped bowl is made with notably thick walls, giving it a substantial presence and allowing it to be used for a variety of purposes.
