Onta ware (Onta-yaki)is a type of Japanese pottery produced in the Onta village in Oita
prefecture.
Pieces are never signed by an individual but only with the sign of the Onta village (sometimes no sign). This is to signify that the production of a single vessel was the combined work of the community, not just one person.
Onta ware has been handed, taken over from father to only one son to the present day. All work is still done within families, preserving the traditional methods and unique styles.
Onta Ware became known to the world after being widely introduced by the founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement Muneyoshi Yanagi, potter Shoji Hamada, and Bernard Leach. In 1970, Onta Ware was selected as an "intangible cultural property requiring measures such as creation of records."
In 1995, it was designated as an "Important National Intangible Cultural Property" along with the Onta Ware technical conservation society being certified.
Onta area has also been inscribed as one of the protected 100 Soundscapes of Japan.
