Beautiful vase by Sakuma Totaro.
Sakuma Totaro (1900-1976), mentored by Japanese Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada (1894-1977), was one of the 20th century's leading Mashiko potters in the Mingei (folk) tradition.

Totaro Sakuma was a student and friend of the famous potter Hamada. He lived and worked in Mashiko, Japan's main center of folk-art pottery. His pieces are especially memorable for the beauty of their design. He once said, "A potter's work must receive affection from his hands. All forms come from the human body. Many pottery forms are not made, but born of early ones."
