Beautiful Jyu-bako box. (from around 1940)
“Jyu-bako” are lacquered stacked boxes used for New Year's dishes in Japan. (Osechi Ryori)
Osechi dishes are packed in stacked boxes with the wish to “pile up the good fortune”.
Many stacked boxes are made of synthetic resin, but this stacked box is made of high-end Wajima-nuri lacquerware.
It is a wonderful work of art made with natural Urushi lacquer and crafted by skilled artisans which involves many processes over a long time.
